I began losing weight because my doctor said I needed to get my cholesterol under control or I would have to go on medication. I didn't want to have a heart attack and I didn't want to go on medication so I started working out on the Curves Smart Program 3 or 4 times a week and tried to walk at least a 1/2 hour every day. I also learned what a portion size actually is. (That was really a shocker!) I'm able to stay motivated by the fact that I feel better about myself because I accomplished something that I didn't think I was truly capable of doing. I am happier about myself and I know it is important to maintain my weight and exercise to control my cholesterol. I'll never forget the first time I tried on a size 8 in a dressing room and it fit! I called my sister in tears. She thought I'd temporarily lost my mind! I had been wearing a 12. The biggest advantage is I am no longer a couch potato. My husband and I go for more walks and actually ride our bikes, things I really enjoy doing. I am also more aware of why I am eating. Am I hungry or bored? That made a huge difference. Now, I usually have gum in my purse just because I feel hungry in between meals. I don't have a scale at home so I weigh myself when I first come into Curves. I have a weight range of about 4 pounds that I try to stay within. I know I'm going to slip-up sometimes, but as long as I'm within range, I'm ok.

What helped you with your weight loss goal the most? • Changing my eating habits and consistently working out at Curves. What keeps you motivated to either maintain your weight loss, or to continue to lose more? • I feel better physically as well as mentally. Buying new clothes in smaller sizes is also exciting. Biggest advantage to having gotten in shape. • My appearance and self-esteem is improving, but I’m not where I want to be yet. I will get to my goal! What makes it easier for you to stay on track with your healthier lifestyle? • I have confidence in myself by saying self-affirming statements such as: I will reach my goal, I’m beautiful, I will work out even if I don’t feel like it, etc.
