Community Involvement
Food Drive 2011
Every year Curves Clubs internationally collect food for their local communities.
This year Curves Hout Bay focused on collecting food for Child Welfare, an NGO, mandated by the Government to render Child Protection Services to vulnerable children and their families. Child Welfare’s emphasis is the preservation and strengthening of families, and the combating of hunger by running soup kitchens and distributing food parcels to need families on their caseloads. It was a real eye-opener to see that Child Welfare’s current caseload is 618 families, involving 2472 children, in Hout Bay alone.
To motivate our members to bring more food we approached local businesses to sponsor vouchers towards a Prize Hamper. For every 5kgs of food brought the member got 1 entry in the Prize Draw for the hamper worth R5000. The hamper included meal vouchers, beauty treatments, jewellery and a 3-month Curves voucher for "you and a friend".
Thanks to the generosity of our Members we collected 751 kilograms of food. We also approached Ambleside School who set this up as a "community awareness project" for the children - they contributed in no small part by collecting 90kgs towards our total.
The Prize Hamper was won by our Member Cass Pike, who in the true spirit of giving, donated the hamper back to Curves to auction to our Members. The auction raised R1500 which has secured another 350kgs of fresh produce for Child Welfare Soup Kitchens - bringing our total to 1126 kgs.
It is always amazing that when a community comes together they can make such a difference in the lives of others. For a short time at least our kiddies in Hout Bay will go to bed with a full tummy.
